We are very much in love with jQuery at the moment and have replaced many of the controls from the ASP.NET AJAX Control Toolkit with jQuery equivalents. One of these is the ACT Tab Container. One thing that we need to do is persist the currently selected tab index across page postbacks.

Achieve BES (BlackBerry Enterprise Server) style wireless synchronisation using RetroViz SmarterMail mail solution and Funambol's SyncML client for BlackBerry.

Note: This article presumes you are using BIS (Blackberry Internet Service) to retrieve email from your SmarterMail mailbox.

The latest version of SmarterMail supports the SyncML protocol. SyncML (now referred to as Open Mobile Alliance Data Synchronization and Device Management) is a way of synchronising information like contacts and calendar items between a handheld device and another computer.

SmarterMail's implementation of SyncML allows you to perform wireless synchronisation of Contacts, Calendar Items, Tasks and Notes with your BlackBerry / Windows Mobile or iPhone device.

This article discusses how you can set up your BlackBerry to wireless synchronise the above with your SmarterMail mailbox.

  1. The first thing you need to is download the SyncML client for BlackBerry. The easiest way is to navigate to http://my.funambol.com/bb/sync.jad using the browser on your BlackBerry. Alternatively you can download the jad file and install using the BlackBerry Desktop Manager software (available for download from the BlackBerry web site).
  2. Once installed, open the Funambol BlackBerry Sync application (most likely located in your Downloads folder), click the Menu key on your device and select settings.
  3. Enter your server location. If you are a RetroViz hosting customer your server location will be http://mail.yourdomain.com/sync/default.aspx (replace yourdomain.com with your domain name)
  4. Enter the username (email address) and password that you normally use to connect to your mailbox or access web mail.
  5. Choose the items that you wish to sync. Your options are:
    1. Sync Contacts
    2. Sync Calendar
    3. Sync Tasks
    4. Sync Notes
  6. Next you can decide whether you want to enable a scheduled sync of items as well as specifying the sync direction.
  7. Once done, press the menu key on your device again and select Save.

You can execute the synchronisation of items manually by selecting the item (e.g. Contacts) from the BlackBerrry sync screen or through the option menu.

If you have set up the above correctly you should be able to connect successfully. To view SyncML connections log into SmarterMail and go to Settings > SyncML (from the navigation pane on the left):
