At RVD we use a number of different network management tools to monitor and support both our own servers and our customers' hardware.

Many of these tools are open source running on the linux platform. Whilst many people still shy away from all things linux we have been writing some easy to follow articles on how to get tools such as Nagios (network monitoring) and MRTG (Network Traffic Graphing) up and running.

Aimed at Windows server administrators without much linux experience, but with good knowledge of networking/server technologies, these articles demonstrate building a linux server from scratch (using VMware) and configuring the necessary software packages.

Go to http://www.retroviz.com/CMS/c20_Linux_and_Open_Source.aspx to view the articles.

We should also have some articles on installing and configuring Vyatta Community edition available in the next few weeks.
