“Microsoft Document Image Writer” feature is not installed by default when you run Office 2007 setup. Likewise it would appear that the Office 2003 SP3 update replaces the MDI format (and Image Writer) with XPS (and Microsoft XPS Document Writer). This article shows you how to install Microsoft Document Image Writer.

The following process also works for Office 2003 SP3 (although menu options may be worded slightly different).

  1. Go to Control Panel, select “Uninstall a program” link under Programs section.”
  2. High Microsoft Office 2007 (it may show Ultimate, Enterprise, Professional, Small Business, Home and Student, etc).
  3. Click on “Change” located on the navigation link near the top of the window.
  4. Select “Add or Remove Features”, then click “Continue”.
  5. Expand “Office Tools” section.
  6. Click on the drop down list for “Microsoft Office Document Imaging” and select “Run all from My Computer”.
  7. Click “Continue”.
  8. Click “Close” when installation done.

We found that with Office 2007 the file associations were created automatically. With Office 2003 we had to create the association manually. To do this:

  1. Go to Control Panel > Folder Options
  2. Select the File Types tab
  3. Add the file extension "MDI" (without speech marks)
  4. Select the newly created extension and click Change
  5. If "Microsoft Document Image Writer" does not display in the list of available applications browse to the executable located in the path "C:\Program Files\Common Files\Microsoft Shared\MODI\12.0\MSPVIEW.EXE"
